Challenge!!!

Hey Everyone!!

Ok, so I came up with a brilliant idea for my mentoring and I challenged them with a math question. They just finished covering Pythagorean Theorem, and I came across this question in one of my math classes so I figured I would see if they could get it. I also figured, hey why not challenge you guys!!! Let's see who gets this first the high school students or the university ones!!! Good Luck!!!

The question is: The perimeter of an isosceles triangle {2 sides are equal and the two angles at the base are equal} ABC with AB=BC is 128 inches. The altitude {height of the triangle which is perpendicular (90 degree angle) to the base ( and in the case of an isosceles triangle, hits at the midpoint of the base)} BD is 48 inches. What is the area of the triangle??

  1. I hate math, and am a visual arts major so this is totally out of my element.
